THE CYCLOPS: A Theatrical Production
Work completed at: University of Waterloo School of Architecture
Role: Director
Year of completion: 2012
As part of the cultural history program of my undergrad studies, I was fortunate enough to be elected by my peers to direct a theatrical production of Euripides' "Cyclops" Everything from marketing material to the original soundtrack was produced completely within 12 weeks by a class of architecture students with a budget made entirely of donations.
In response to the challenging venue of a curling arena dining hall, the concept was to use darkness to our advantage. In complete darkness, what one sees becomes reality. By understanding how light behaved in a vacuum, we were able to control perception by selectively revealing and concealing environments through illumination.
After a journey of improvisation and collaboration, the cyclops was a truly homogenous body of work forged from the imaginations of 80 aspiring architecture students. This experience remains to be one of the most defining experiences of my life.
